Puppy Grooming

Early Grooming is Essential…

We cannot stress enough the importance of exposing your puppies to the grooming experiences as early as possible. The earlier you get your puppy used to being groomed the easier it will be. Some pet owners wait until the puppy is 6 - 8 months old before the first haircut. It's a mistake. The puppy is frightened and overwhelmed.

Puppies should be introduced to professional grooming when they are about 12 weeks old. Working as a team, you and your groomer will provide the care that your puppy needs to look and feel his best.

Here are some pointers to help your puppy get used to the grooming routine.

    • Play with your puppy's feet and rub your fingers between its toes a couple times a day. (This will make nail clipping easier in the future)
    • Open your puppy's mouth and touch its teeth and gums. Dental care should begin as early as possible. You can begin by using a finger brush or puppy toothbrush and a toothpaste made for dogs.
    • Use a wet cotton ball to clean the area under his eyes (if your dog collects drainage under his/her eyes)
    • Wipe the ears out with a cotton ball using ear cleaner to get them used to ear cleanings
    • When your puppy is comfortable with being handled, you are ready to advance to brushing and combing. Brush and/or comb him/her regularly. Conduct frequent short sessions with patience, verbal praise and treats.

All of these activities should start right away when you bring the puppy home and while they are still curious. Once curiosity starts turning in to fear, you may need the assistance of a professional trainer to overcome your dogs' objections to these activities. And speaking of professional training, we strongly encourages all dog owners, no matter how big or small your dog is, to work with a trainer while your dog is young. Many future troubles can be avoided by setting up limits and expectations for you and your dog and you'll enjoy a much happier relationship.

Preparing for the Big Day”…

  • Stop by the salon with your puppy few times to familiarize with all the sights, sounds and smell before puppys actual appointment.
  • Take the puppy for few short car rides to get used to traveling.
  • Don’t feed the puppy too much or even skip a meal if your appointment is in the early morning.
  • Be sure to exercise your puppy (go potty) right before the grooming appointment.
  •  Be happy on your way to the grooming salon. If you feel stressed and nervous, your puppy will pick up on your feelings.

For puppy's first visit, we would like to start with

  • Warm bath with puppy tearless shampoo
  • Conditioner if the puppy needs it
  • Blow dry on the table at least few minutes then cool air cage dry
  • Nail trim and file
  • Ear cleaning
  • Brushing
  • Trim hair around the feet, pads and in front of the eyes if puppy needs it
  • A sanitary clip if puppy needs it
